Application Intake

The UK JET Application is only available online on the register page during the application period, which usually starts in October. Online application is mandatory and any CVs or other documents other than the designated online forms are not accepted. The Guidelines and online application forms of the intake year are available from the register page during the application intake period.

Interview

ALT interviews will be conducted in January and CIR interviews will be conducted in February. Those who are selected for interview will receive notification of their designated time and date via email. Interview notifications will be sent out progressively from mid-December. Please note that CIR interviews are conducted in Japanese at the Embassy of Japan in London only.

Candidates who know in advance that they are not available for certain dates in the interview months should include a letter stating their unavailable dates in their application pack.

Please note that interview dates can vary depending on the volume of the applicants. Please also note that Skype interviews or interviews other than at the Embassy of Japan in the UK or Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh cannot be arranged.

Early Departure

Current graduates applying to the JET Programme may choose to be considered for early placement in April or after April but before the July/August departure. Please note should you wish to apply for Early Departure, you will have to submit a completed Certificate of Health Form and International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) prior to your the interview date. Any cost incurred for obtaining these will be your responsibility. Please contact the JET Office should you wish to apply for Early Departure so the letter to use to obtain ICPC can be provided. If you select for Early Departure on your application form but have not submitted these documents by your interview date, your application for Early Departure will not be considered any further and you will only be considered for summer departure. Please note that you will get your placement notification with your result in March if you are successful as an Early Departure candidate, therefore, withdrawal after receiving your result will void your candidacy for the following year’s application.

Orientations and Training

Pre-Departure Orientation

All new JET Programme participants must attend a Pre-departure orientation that takes place in London in mid- July prior to departure for Japan. This orientation is mandatory for new JETs and designed to prepare new JET Programme participants for their departure to Japan including issuing a visa for Japan and providing flight information. Please note that there will be no Pre-Departure Orientation for those already residing in Japan.

Post-Arrival Orientation

Participation in the post-arrival orientation in Tokyo is mandatory for all new JET participants. JET participants will receive training necessary for carrying out their work duties in Japan.

Q&A Sessions

Q&A sessions are hosted by local chapters of the JETAA (JET alumni association) for the new participants in June and July. These sessions are intended to provide an opportunity for new JETs to speak with experienced alumni who can provide advice on preparing for departure, life in Japan, and job duties as an ALT/CIR.
