How to apply

Proof of Nationality

All applicants are required to submit 4 photocopies of their current UK passport as proof of their British Citizenship. The photocopies may be in black-and-white or colour as long as they are clear and legible. Expired passports or other forms of photo ID (e.g. UK driving licence) will not be accepted as proof of eligibility for the UK JET Programme.

If you are a British Citizen but do not hold a current UK passport, please make arrangements to obtain one immediately. You will need to send us a photocopy of your birth certificate along with evidence that your passport application is being processed e.g. email from Her Majesty’s Passport Office. Your new passport must be ready in time to bring to your interview or your application for the JET Programme will be withdrawn.

Note on passport renewal:

As of December 2013, it is no longer possible to renew a British passport at the British Embassy in Tokyo. British nationals in Japan must submit their passport application to Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK. If your passport is due to expire in the near future, you may wish to renew it before applying for your Japanese working visa.
